Discovery Day celebrations began at Cape Bonavista with one of the biggest motorcades ever seen in Bonavista.
More than 100 cars made their way to the opening ceremonies at the Matthew Legacy Site where record crowds also turned out.
The main celebrations took place on Saturday, starting with the Kids Walking Parade, which has become a tradition in the town. Leading the parade were entertainer Terry Reilly, Miss Teen Newfoundland and Labrador Danielle Seaward, Mayor Betty Fitzgerald, John Cabot (Wilbur Hobbs) and his wife Mattea (Corina Mouland) Children of all ages were joined by parents in the walk from the playground to the site, where they were participated in the Teddy Bears Picnic with Terry Reilly.
The remainder of the day was devoted to the young with a pirates treasure hunt, lip-sync and a talent show. However, the weather became increasingly cold and windy and, as a result, the open-air dance, planned for that night at the Legacy Site, had to be cancelled.
It was still a very successful event, says site manager Debbie Way, who was delighted with the attendance at all the planned activities. She says although Discovery Day is over, there will still be many events taking place at the site during the summer and into the fall.
