The district of Terra Nova will remain Tory blue following today's byelection, but a new representative in Sandy Collins will fill the seat in the House of Assembly.
Collins is the former executive assistant to Paul Oram who gave up the seat when he suddenly quit politics last month.
Collins jumped out into an early lead when the first poll results came in shortly after 8 p.m. The lead held and gradually widened as additional poll results were reported.
When all 37 polls reported, Collins captured 2,398 of the votes. Liberal John Baird drew 1,663 votes, follwed by New Democratic Party candidate Robin Brentnall with 297.
Premier Danny Williams said the win shows that the people of the province still have confidence in the provincial government.
Williams noted that with the House of Assembly opening on Monday afternoon, he hopes to have a new Transportation Minister in place by that time.
