A team of medical professionals are coming to Clarenville and Bonavista next week to present on eating disorders.

Members of the Eating Disorder Interprofessional Community Capacity Building Program (EDICCB) will conduct a two-day workshop on Sept. 15 and 16 at the St. Jude Hotel in Clarenville.

The interprofessional sessions (about 60 healthcare professionals from the Burin-Clarenville-Bonavista region will be in attendance) will be held on the morning and afternoon 15th and 16th.

A public meeting for families and interested community groups will be held on the evening of the 15th. The purpose of the public meeting is to establish a family-focused community support group for those who need improved support and treatment services.

Vince Withers, Chairperson of the Eating Disorder Foundation of NL, said this is a very important initiative to increase awareness and build and enhance relationships with healthcare professionals in the area.

The workshop is designed to increase professionals’ knowledge and confidence in treating individuals with eating disorders and their families. It will feature slides, video, reference material and learning activities. Topics covered include prevention, identification, intervention, referral to specialized services and follow-up after treatment.

It also emphasizes the importance of interprofessional care, involving not only health care workers but also other professionals, such as social workers, psychologists and teachers, who may deal with eating disorders.
