Health Minister Jerome Kennedy continued his funding announcement circuit in Clarenville last week where he announced $877,000 for the Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital.

Kennedy was joined by Pat Coish-Snow, vice president of regional acute care, Eastern Health; Ross Wiseman, MHA for Trinity North and members of the Clarenville Town Council to announce the funding for capital equipment, repairs and renovations..

Clarenville Town Councilor Bill Bailey said it’s great to see money invested into the community’s health care facility.

“It’s a major thing in this community, healthcare of course,” Bailey said. “(The facility) provides a service to a very large catchment area, it’s good news all around.”

Deputy Mayor Frazer Russell agreed with Bailey, saying the town is pleased to see that the government has seen fit to put more funds into Clarenville's health care facility.

“The present government has been pretty serious about health care in rural Newfoundland,” Russell said. “Certainly this amount of funding now can enhance the services that they’re already providing. Residents should be very pleased with that.”

Kennedy said this isn’t the first investment the provincial government has made to this facility.

“The funding we are announcing today will help further strengthen this hospital by enhancing patient care and providing equipment needed for top-tier medical services,” Kennedy said.

The funding will be used for the purchase of capital equipment, including $609,332 for new cardiac equipment; $60,000 for bed replacements; $57,552 for laboratory equipment; $21,800 for operating room instruments; $10,311 for sterilizer load assembly; and $6,736 for respiratory equipment.

Other investments include $44,300 for a water evaluation; $39,500 for modernization of transfer switches; and $27,500 to survey the electrical distribution systems.

“I am delighted our government continues to make strategic investments in our health system,” said Wiseman. “The Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital provides quality patient-focused care and these investments will greatly enhance patient service in our region.”
