The Clarenville High School robotics team is in Orlando, Florida this week competing in the 11th annual International Student ROV Competition.

They earned the right to compete after winning the provincial competition earlier this spring.

Clarenville High is among 55 teams representing schools, colleges and universities from 19 different states and eight different countries taking part.

This year’s competition theme highlights the role ROVs play in assessing World War II shipwrecks and any hazardous cargo they may still contain. The mission tasks include documenting a fictional wreck site, clearing the wreck of debris, and removing fuel oil that remains on board.

Today the team passed their safety inspection. Their first mission attempt is tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. Newfoundland time.

The competition is being held at the YMCA Aquatic and Family Center in Orlando. It concludes Saturday.
