Members of the Clarenville Area Soccer Association’s U-18, U-16 and U-14 squads combined to form the first Clarenville RE/MAX Clash team and travelled to Conception Bay North July 11 to play two soccer games.
The first was against a very organized U-16 team at St. Francis Field in Harbour Grace. The second exhibition match was in Bay Roberts where they faced a Conception Bay North Lightening team made up of a mixture of different age groups very similar to the Clarenville squad.
The first game in Harbour Grace started well as the Clarenville Clash faced a very skilled and organized team that competes regularly in the Metro League.
Soon into the game the score was 2-1 for Harbour Grace.
Harbour Grace soccer director Anne Combs said her team was ‘scared’.
But the skill and experience of the hometown Harbour Grace squad soon became evident and the final score showed it.
Clarenville came out on the losing end of an 8-1 battle. Dakota Seward was the lone goal scorer for the Clarenville squad.
The next game in Bay Roberts was a different story.
Conception Bay North Lightening came out with the first goal. However, a strike from U-14 player Adam Bursey brought the Clash even.
Eventually goals from Dakota Seward, Brad Rodway, and a hat trick from Matt Fudge added up and the final score say the visiting Clarenville team with a clear 6-3 victory.
Clash coach/director Reilly Fitzgerald says it was a good experience.
“We faced a very organized team and learned some good lessons in our defeat,” says Fitzgerald. “In our second challenge we found that we had the ability to play competitively and came away with our first ever win.”
The next challenge for the Clarenville RE/MAX Clash comes this weekend when they host an U-16 team from Placentia.
