The Clarenville Don Cherry’s softball team brought home the bronze at a provincial tournament last weekend.
They fought their way to third place during the Provincial Men’s E division softball tournament, held from Aug. 20 to 22 at the ball fields in Clarenville and Shoal Harbour. Their final match took place Sunday afternoon when they were defeated (14-8) by the St. John’s Kelly’s Pub team.
The Budwiser team from Paradise earned their way to second after eliminating Bay Roberts’ Kelly’s Landing (14-2). Kelly’s Pub finished first after Sunday’s championship game, overtaking Budwiser (14-1).
The tournament brought out 15 teams from various Eastern regions of the province. Earl Green, one of tournament organizers, said it was a good showing.
“It went over really well. All the teams that were there were very professional and every cordial. There were no problems at all,” Green said.
Last year Clarenville hosted the Male B and C division tournaments.
“We had E here in previous years, but this had a bigger turnout than before. It was just good ball. Everybody had a good time. They all had a good time and went home happy.
“The team that won was very happy,” he joked.
The George’s Brook Islanders, Musgravetown Mayhem, Random Island Sons of Pitches, and the Whiskey Jacks from Bonavista also represented the local area. The Islanders eliminated the Whiskey Jacks at the end of the round-robin with a score of (14-12).
