Clarenville wins first of the weekend 4-2

The Clarenville Ford Caribous inched ahead of the Gander Flyers Saturday night with a 4-2 win at home.

Flyer Josh Day chases down Caribou Mason Reid in Saturday night’s game at the Eastlink Events Centre. The Bous went on to win the game 4-2.

With both teams coming into the game with 17 points apiece, Clarenville claimed third place in the league standings outright, if only potentially for one night.

The Caribous played well throughout the game, but the second period is what really set the two teams apart.

Outshooting Gander 14-6 in the frame, Clarenville got a goal each from longtime Caribou Brad Crann and forward Kevin Reid.

Chad Earle added a goal in the third, assisted by Crann and Dustin Russell.

The Flyers made it close in the final period, with a goal coming from Ray Dalton, assisted by Andrew Ryan and former Bou Mitch Oake and another with two minutes remaining from Steve Brazil assisted by Ryan Matheson and Jordan Escott.

Ryan Desrosiers of the Caribous added an empty netter to put it away.

Caribous’ goaltender Jason Churchill looked sharp all night as well, stopping 36 shots for the win and player of the game honours.

Gander will look to bounce back Sunday afternoon at the Eastlink Events Centre.

The game is Clarenville’s final home contest of the regular season and will also see local legend Boonie Lethbridge shave his long beard in a fundraising effort for ALS Society of Newfoundland and Labrador. Boonie loses his whiskers during the second intermission.
