Champion figure skater to celebrate Flying Blades’ 50th at ice show

The Flying Blades Figure Skating Club is looking to cap off its 50th year in style at the annual gala ice show, featuring world champion skater Kurt Browning.

Famous figure skater Kurt Browning is coming to Clarenville next month for the Flying Blades Figure Skating Club’s annual ice show.

The Canadian skating icon is four-time world champion and a four-time Canadian champion, turning professional back in 1994.

Flying Blades president Susan Dean told The Packet the feeling of having Browning come for the 50th anniversary celebration is “total excitement!”

Dean said club founder Elizabeth Swan’s vision for Flying Blades was always about the skaters themselves. For them to be able to see, meet and skate alongside Browning will be an opportunity of a lifetime.

“Some of them will never be able to see a world champion again,” Dean said.

They are lucky because Browning doesn’t usually do small ice shows, said Dean, adding her email has blown up and the excitement is building since telling the Flying Blades skaters about the big announcement.

“The kids are excited, the parents are excited,” she said. “It’s a great way to close off the 50th year and to keep the vision of ‘Every child can skate and every child can meet a world champion.’ ”

Dean said Browning is a great choice for a guest skater because he is so down to earth.

“He’s coming in to celebrate 50 years of skating and to help the skaters celebrate with us,” Dean said. “This is not about making money for the club, this is to focus on the skaters, to celebrate skating, to celebrate Elizabeth Swan’s vision.”

The ice show will take place at the Eastlink Events Centre in Clarenville on Friday, April 15, at 7 p.m.
