CLARENVILLE, NL — Clarenville’s annual winter carnival “Wintertainment” is back with 10 days of events beginning on Feb. 8.

Brandon Reardon, the Town of Clarenville’s recreation manager, told the Packet there are plenty of new events this year, like free bowling for families affected by autism and a Special Olympics boil-up.

“We’re trying to get out to some of the community groups that might not have had the resources to do (an event), so we reached out to make everything as inclusive as possible,” said Reardon.

As always, opening ceremonies on Thursday evening, Feb. 8, will be held at the Eastlink Events Centre (EEC), with glow skating to follow.

The organizing committee consists of nine people representing different aspects of the community, such as youth, seniors, outdoor activity and the ski hill.

Another new event is a huge outdoor get-together at White Hills on Wednesday, Feb. 14 for White Hills Family Day.

Just one of the unique activities on this day will be “dummy downhill,” where families work together to build a sled and send a dummy down over the slope.

Reardon says videos on the Wintertainment Facebook page of the dummy downhill are a good indication of how much fun this event will be.

There will be prizes for best-dressed dummy, best name, furthest distance and best crash. The day will conclude with a pig roast with baked beans, followed by family games nigh.

“We’re absolutely thrilled with the schedule of events,” said Reardon. “Obviously, a lot of these events are going to be weather-dependent, so our fingers are crossed.”

Daily schedule updates are available on the Wintertainment Facebook page (left hand side and click “join our list”) and the EEC website.
