He has planned the half marathon to take place Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. during the Feile Festival in Tilting, which occurs the third week in September.
“When I attended the festival last summer, I mentioned to the organizer that we should have a five-kilometre run next year and he said, ‘Go for it,’ ” Dwyer told The Pilot.
Upon returning to St. John’s, he talked with some friends who suggested having a half marathon and the idea was born. He currently has a small committee formed to help with plans and preparations.
“There’s a good bit of preparation involved,” he said. “I’ve made contact with the Fogo Island recreation director and the council and RCMP have given us their support and people are supporting the event.”
The half marathon will be 21.1 kilometres in distance, starting on Seldom Road and ending on the south side of Tilting near the fire hall.
There will be a three-hour time limit with water stations set up every five kilometres. It is open to anyone and registration will take place through the Running Room website, as soon as Dwyer has the final details in place.
Early registration will take place until July 31. Then there will be an increase in the registration fee, effective Aug. 1.
“Anyone who registers before Aug. 1 will receive a T-shirt and we will be handing out finisher’s medals during a reception following the half-marathon at the fire hall in Tilting,” Dwyer said.
He encourages people of all ages and experience to participate in the event.
“There’s a lot of time to train if you’re a new runner or a more seasoned runner,” he said.
