Excitement was in the air at the Clarenville Events Centre theatre Saturday night as Greg Pittman, chair of the 2014 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games, officially announced the host committee.

It isn't the first time Clarenville has hosted a provincial Winter Games. The first was in 1994. It will be 20 years when it returns to the town again.

"Up to 1,500 athletes, officials and coaches will be welcomed to our town in March, 2014," says Pittman. "These Winter Games will showcase everything Clarenville has to offer and will provide young people from across the province an opportunity to demonstrate their athletic skills."

With the naming of the host committee, Pittman said, "The planning for a very successful Games has now started and I know the committee has the determination and drive to create a wonderful opportunity for the athletes."

In addition to announcing the members of the host committee a $100,000 contribution from the Town of Clarenville was announced by deputy mayor Frazer Russell. The Clarenville Area Co-op also announced a sponsorship of $100,000 in collaboration with the Clarenville Lions Club and its 50-50 draw.

"The support by the Town of Clarenville, the Clarenville Area Co-op and the Clarenville Lions Club has been incredible," said Pittman.

Also on hand for the official launch were Ross Wiseman, MHA for Trinity North, and Doug Fowler, president of Sport NL.

Pittman was named chair of the host committee for the games last March. For the past 11 months he has been busy getting his committee in place. While there was no shortage of strong individuals to choose from Pittman took his time to ensure he had the right person for the right job.
