New awards program created to honour N.L.’s marine industry


For the first time individuals and organizations involved in Newfoundland and Labrador’s marine industry will be celebrated for the work they do.

The Turning the Tide awards program was announced today.

Three awards will be presented to recognize contributions to the industry’s developments and achievements.

They are:

- The Operational Leadership Excellence Award will be presented to an outstanding business that demonstrated leadership and integrity to address challenges that sets a strong example and benefit to the industry.

- The Individual Lifetime Achievement Award will go to one individual each year who is viewed as having demonstrated exemplary leadership in driving excellence in his or her sector and has contributed to the positive image and betterment of the industry.

- The Award of Historical Significance will recognize an individual, organization or community that through either a singular accomplishment or a multitude of activities that turned the tides of history, or through demonstrated perseverance and strength of character that has positively impacted the fortunes of others, contributing significantly to the province’s marine industry.

The program is sponsored by the St. John’s Port Authority.

“Even with the storied history and tradition of our reliance on the sea, and in most recent years with offshore oil extraction and innovation cold ocean engineering, there has never been a full recognition of the outstanding individuals and organizations who have led the way in our marine industry,” Turning the Tide awards selection board chairman Paul Antle said in a news release.

“Through these awards, we will now acknowledge and give appropriate recognition to those pioneers who led the way in our ocean-based industries.”

Members of the selection board will choose the recipients for the inaugural three awards, which will be presented at a gala event on April 5 in St. John’s.

Proceeds from the gala will support the ongoing operation of the Home from The Sea Foundation in Elliston.
