Clarenville Nordic skiers place at N.L. Cup races

GANDER, N.L. — The Clarenville Nordic skiers are very pleased with their results after placing at the Newfoundland and Labrador Cup races at Airport Nordic in Gander.

The group had an extremely strong showing in both the female and male categories, racing on both Saturday (sprints) and Sunday (distance), March 24-25.

Saturday’s sprints saw Clarenville Nordics Jocelyn Coates and Katie Spurrell ski to a first and second place finish respectively in the Bantam girls finals.

Mark Spurrell, also from Clarenville Nordic, was the top male skier in the Peewee boys category.

Sunday’s distance races saw similar results with Jocelyn and Katie finishing first and second in the 3.2-kilometre Bantam girls, and Mark finishing first in the Bantam boys 3.2-kilometre race.

Jillian Coates, in the Midget girls competitive division skied to a first place finish in 6.4-kilometre freestyle event.

Trevor Coates, ski team coach, also joined in the fun. He picked up two second place finishes in the master category.
