New Kindle Scribe devices focus on productivity, note-taking and eye-friendly colour display technology
Amazon has unveiled a redesigned Kindle Scribe lineup, introducing its first-ever colour Kindle Scribe as the company expands its focus on digital reading and productivity tools.
The updated range includes a next-generation Kindle Scribe with and without a front light, alongside the new Kindle Scribe Colorsoft. Amazon says the devices have been redesigned from the ground up to improve writing performance, portability and document management for readers, students and professionals alike.
The announcement comes as demand continues to grow for e-readers that combine traditional reading functions with digital note-taking, particularly among users looking for alternatives to tablet devices that can be distracting due to apps and notifications.
Thinner, lighter and faster Kindle Scribe design
Amazon says the latest Kindle Scribe devices are significantly slimmer and lighter than previous models, measuring 5.4 mm thick and weighing about 400 grams.
The devices feature an 11-inch glare-free display designed to resemble the proportions of a standard sheet of paper. According to the company, the larger screen is intended to improve document review, handwritten note-taking and portability for users who work remotely or study on the go.
Hardware upgrades aim to improve writing experience
Several hardware improvements have been introduced across the lineup, including:
- A redesigned front light system using miniaturized LEDs for more even illumination
- A narrower bezel around the display
- Texture-molded glass intended to create more natural friction when writing with the stylus
- A redesigned display stack to reduce parallax and improve pen accuracy
- A new quad-core processor, increased memory and updated Oxide display technology for faster performance
Amazon says the changes are designed to make writing feel closer to using pen and paper, while also speeding up page turns and note synchronization.
Kindle Scribe Colorsoft brings colour note-taking to Kindle
The biggest addition to the lineup is the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, the first Kindle Scribe device to support colour writing and annotation.
Unlike conventional LCD tablets, Amazon says the Colorsoft display was designed to produce softer colours that are easier on the eyes during long reading or writing sessions.
Custom display technology targets eye comfort
The company developed a custom colour display system that combines a colour filter with a light guide using nitride LEDs. Amazon says this helps maintain readability and colour clarity without washing out details on the screen.
A new rendering engine has also been added to improve responsiveness when writing or drawing in colour.
The device supports 10 pen colours and five highlighter colours, allowing users to annotate documents, organize notes and sketch with greater flexibility.
Amazon is also introducing new shading tools aimed at artists and creators, allowing smoother gradients and more detailed illustrations.
AI-powered productivity features added to Kindle Scribe
Amazon is positioning the new Kindle Scribe lineup as more than an e-reader, emphasizing productivity and organization tools powered by artificial intelligence.
AI notebook search and cloud integration
One of the headline features is an AI-powered notebook search system that allows users to search handwritten notes using natural language queries. The software can also generate summaries and respond to follow-up questions based on notebook content.
The updated software includes:
Quick Notes and redesigned Home screen
Users can create notes directly from the new Home screen, while recently opened books, notebooks and documents are easier to access.
Google Drive and OneDrive support
The devices now integrate with both Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive, enabling users to import files for annotation and export marked-up PDFs.
OneNote compatibility
Notebook pages can also be exported to Microsoft OneNote as converted text or embedded images, allowing continued editing across laptops and mobile devices.
Workspace organization tools
A new Workspace feature enables users to organize books, notebooks and documents into folders for easier management.
Battery life and distraction-free reading remain central features
Amazon says the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft can deliver weeks of battery life on a single charge, maintaining one of the key advantages of e-ink devices over conventional tablets.
The company also emphasized that the Kindle ecosystem remains focused on distraction-free reading and writing, with no social media apps or push notifications interrupting users while working or reading.
Each device includes a redesigned pen that magnetically attaches to the Kindle Scribe and does not require charging.
Amazon is also launching new folio-style covers, including plant-based and premium leather options, as well as an executive notebook-style case.
Pre-orders now open for Canadian customers
Amazon says the Kindle Scribe, Kindle Scribe Colorsoft and Kindle Scribe models without a front light are now available for pre-order.
While Canadian pricing details were not fully outlined in the announcement, the devices are expected to compete in the growing premium e-reader and digital notebook market, where consumers increasingly use e-ink devices for work, education and personal organization.
The launch marks Amazon’s latest effort to expand Kindle beyond traditional e-reading, positioning the Scribe lineup as a multifunctional tool for reading, note-taking and creative work.
