At the event in St. John’s Thursday night, the NLOWE recognized the Entrepreneurs of the Year in categories such as vision, innovation and excellence.

Hayes, a Red Seal chef, won the Visionary Award, sponsored by Cox and Palmer, which was presented for demonstrating leadership through her business within the food industry, being adaptable, and successful.

“It is a great honour to be recognized as a visionary, especially in this province where there are a lot of very strong women creating their vision and doing what they love,” said Hayes. “I am inspired by anyone who is doing what they love for a living.”

The Bonavista Social Club is not only a restaurant, but a food production facility that specializes in local, homegrown food products. They grow much of their own vegetables, use locally gathered products such as wild berries and even raise some of their own livestock for their ingredients.

Paula Sheppard, CEO of NLOWE, says women have always played an important role in the businesses of the province.

“Women business owners are creating jobs, creating wealth and making a great impact on our communities. We want to recognize that,” said Sheppard.
