Bonavista mom a social media hit with elfish hijinks

BONAVISTA, N.L. — While elves on shelves are a common sight around Christmas on social media, one Bonavista mom decided to get into some holiday fun herself and has her Facebook audience delighted with the results.

Sheri Gillam has been dressing up as an elf, getting up to some mischief and posting the hilarious photos online.

Sheri told TC Media it all started innocently enough. She was dressing up as an elf for a skit in a local church pageant and wanted to make sure her 21-month old son Elijah wouldn’t be scared of her in the costume.

Sheri told TC Media it all started innocently enough. She was dressing up as an elf for a skit in a local church pageant and wanted to make sure her 21-month old son Elijah wouldn’t be scared of her in the costume.

So when Sheri climbed onto her son’s crib, her husband Johnny snapped a picture to send to his sister Shelley.

“She just loved it,” Sheri told TC Media. “The next night, I said to Johnny, ‘I’m going to do it again tonight. I’m going to wrap myself around the tree.’

“After that one, that was it, then I couldn’t stop,” she laughed.

Since the initial photo of Sheri, she’s gone on to guzzle pancake syrup, make snow angels in flour and even be duct taped to the wall.

Sheri says people don’t realize she’s actually a shy and quiet person, but she loves to make people laugh and brighten the days of others.

“I’ve had people come to me who’ve been down in the dumps … and people who’ve had family members who have passed away — it brightens them up to see the pictures.

“My personality is, if I can help somebody else in a down situation, it’s all worth it.”

Sheri’s three stepchildren — AJ, 17; Keegan, 16; and Emma, 12 — live in Ontario and love seeing the daily posts.

“They get a great kick out of it,” said Sheri.

She says Emma, especially, enjoys how silly Sheri can be by dressing up like the elf.

Coming up with ideas for an elf photo, night after night, could be challenging, but Sheri is thankful to get help from others and has lots of fun staging the shots.

The photos are certainly taking off on Facebook, with many of Sheri’s friends looking forward to every new photo.

She says many have told her they’re going to miss seeing the photos once Christmas is over.

But with a whole year to think about ideas for next Christmas, Sheri might have more suprises in store for next year.
