Second convention coming this summer

GANDER, N.L. —

The return of central Newfoundland’s celebration of all things geek is certainly welcomed by Scott Simms.

Gander Geek Fest – which places focus things like comics, film, video games, anime and cosplay – will return for its second run July 12 to 14.

For Simms, the co-owner of Two Guys with Beards, which specializes in comics and toys in Grand Falls-Windsor, it offers a sense of place for those who embrace their inner geek.

“It gives everyone a chance to get together and show off what they love, and do it in a completely judgment-free zone,” said Simms. “It’s just a tremendous event for everybody.”

While there are similar conventions throughout the province, it’s the only one of its kind in this central area. Working as a teacher, Simms said there’s a pent-up need for this type of quick access event.

“I have taught at a half-a-dozen schools in central, and every single school you go to there are people who are into all these geeky things, but don’t necessarily have an avenue to talk to other people about it,” he said. “When Geek Fest is happening in Gander and there are hundreds of people attending, you know there’s a demand for it.”

At the last convention, according to Jerry Knee, Gander’s community events co-ordinator, about 400 people took part in the weekend event.

Based on that success, the town decided to offer the event once again.

“Word has been spreading and we’ve been getting a lot of positive feedback about it,” said Knee. “We didn’t see any reason not to bring it back and give it a second try.”

The event will follow a similar format to last year, which included vendor tables, gaming, a costume contest, writers’ tables, Q&As, and celebrity appearances.

This year, Knee said, Paul McGillion, whose film credits include Stargate Atlantis, Star Trek, Tomorrowland, The Flash, Once Upon a Time and The X-Files, will be the celebrity guest. Two authors from Engen books will be holding sessions on writing and publishing, and costume building will be done by Foamwerx cosplay.
