In what turned out to be a little closer than many polls expected, Liberal MP Churence Rogers retained his seat in parliament for Bonavista-Burin-Trinity Monday night, Oct. 21.

But, Rogers says, it doesn’t matter if he won by one seat or 1,000.

“A win is a win, and I just look forward to working for the people of Bonavista-Burin-Trinity for the next four years,” said Rogers.

This was his first general election, having initially won the seat in a byelection a year and a half ago after former Liberal cabinet minister Judy Foote resigned.

Watching the results from Centreville-Wareham-Trinity, in the Bonavista North area, Rogers thanked his supporters, volunteers, family and fellow candidates for a race well-run.

He says he owes a great amount of gratitude to his team, and is pleased with the amount of work they put in. He lists challenges in the fishing industry for harvesters and other workers, other industries like tourism and oil and gas, as well as concentrating on seniors issues, as areas to be addressed that he heard about on the campaign trail.

Looking ahead to the next term in office, he says he’s eager to continue dealing with issues that are important to the residents of the riding.

“Regardless of where the people in the riding (are), I’ll continue to do what I did for the last year and a half. I’ll continue to work hard, be accessible and transparent, and try to work for and do the work an MP should be doing on behalf of the people that we represent.”

Rogers also specifically noted that he’ll be a representative for all constituents, no matter how they voted on during the federal election.

“Whether they voted for another candidate or not is unimportant. It’s about representing all the people of Bonavista-Burin-Trinity and working on their behalf.”
