LITTLE HEART’S EASE, N.L. — A small school is only too proud to show off the big art of one of its talented students — front and centre in the gymnasium.
Alice Spurrell is a Grade 11 student at Southwest Arm Academy. Interested in art since Grade 5, Alice told The Packet it's prompted her to further pursue this hobby.
“In art class one day, we had to make a painting and after that, I’ve fell in love with it,” says Alice.
She’s done additional classes with Cindy Bowring and continued to practice her talent.
At last year’s art and design class Alice began another mural for the school after a previous one was painted over.
She started work on a large mural last spring and continued her efforts during summer break. She used sheets of board to be moved into the gym.
“I got it finished right before school started up again.”
The landscape scene took her many hours to complete, and a painting of this size was a first. Alice normally uses regular-sized canvases and even small beach rocks.
“This is the largest piece I’ve done,” she says.
She paints many landscapes and had a lot of fun adding some of the details, like the wildlife in the painting.
“I really had fun with that bird there…I usually never paint animals so I really surprised myself there.”
