A 73-year-old man from Dildo has become a media sensation, as the video for his, “The Dildo Song” was released today.

John Reid was the star of the video, which is available on YouTube and features many residents of the town, including his son Sheldon Reid and his nephew Dean Reid. Sheldon and Dean played and sang backup for John when he recorded the song last month at Comfort Cove Sound studio in St. John’s.

It’s part of a five-year recording deal which John Reid signed with a company in Alberta owned by Raghav Mathur.

Reid wrote the tune in the 1980s when there was a petition by some of the 1,500 residents to change the name of the town.

Over the years, it’s become the town’s anthem, as Reid would sing it at shed parties and special events in town.

But in the last month or so, it’s been heard by millions as a result of the attention put on his hometown by Kimmel, the popular TV late-night talk show host.

The video opens with the giant letters forming “Dildo,” which was built on a hill overlooking town — a gift from Kimmel. It then shows John Reid at various parts of the town — by the Dildo Brewery and in a boat. Reid’s daughter, Susan, is also in the video, along with a photo of John Reid and his late wife, Liz. It closes with a group of residents gathering to hear John, Dean and Sheldon sing at Dildo Outdoor Adventures, where they clap and erupt into cheering.

“I never thought my song would end up on (international) TV,” Reid told The Telegram after appearing on Kimmel’s show. “I’ve sung that song a lot over the years, but usually only at parties or get-togethers in the garage or at Dildo Days.

“But this is something else.”
