This past weekend the Clarenville Area Minor Hockey Association (CAMHA) held the first annual Rebecca Russell U15 female hockey tournament.
The home team Caribous took gold, beating Marystown 4-3 in the finals.
The Bonavista-Trinity Minor Hockey Association Cabots U15 female team won the bronze medal defeating the Trinity-Placentia TeePees to finish in third for the event. Gander finished fifth.
The team wrote a tribute to Rebecca which was read at the opening ceremony. They thanked her for coming on as minor hockey’s technical director four years ago.
“After many years of dedication to the sport, she helped many of us find our love for hockey over countless laps and ear piercing whistles, while we look up to her experience in the Canada winter games at the age of 12 and 17, and how she played in the women’s U22 Canadian team, and how she was the first female hockey player to leave Newfoundland,” read the speech.
They thanked Rebecca, calling her their hero.
