Black, red and white are now official colours for minor hockey players

CLARENVILLE, N.L.

There will be no doubt about who’s who when Clarenville Minor Hockey players step onto the ice from now on.

They’ll be sporting black, red and white jerseys and a distinctive logo that screams ferocious.

The angry caribou, with hot breath meeting cold air and shooting plumes of steam from its nostrils, will adorn the front of all jerseys.

It’s a dramatic diversion from the myriad of colours used by minor hockey players up to now. In the past they wore blue, or white, or grey — depending on the division they were playing in.

Stephen Thistle, president of the Clarenville Area Minor Hockey Association (CAMHA) said there was no unifying colour; nothing that distinguished Clarenville.

They needed to change, he said.

The process of selecting new jerseys began last winter and spring. Parents and players were surveyed and it was obvious from there that they wanted new colours to align with other sporting teams in town.

Thistle noted the Clarenville Senior Caribous had chosen black, red and white for their jersey colours, and minor softball teams from the town were also wearing red and black.

The minor hockey players and parents felt they should be sporting those same colours as well.

“Parents felt that Clarenville minor hockey teams had no identity,” Thistle said, adding, “other towns have distinctive colours. Marystown is green and Bonavista is burgundy and they keep those colours year after year for their teams. We felt Clarenville minor hockey should do the same.”

The process of choosing a logo to compliment the new colours began with 10 different choices, he said. It was finally narrowed down to the one that now adorns centre ice at the Eastlink Events Centre.

About 500 jerseys were ordered for minor hockey players, for competitive divisions.

Thistle says the only minor hockey teams that don’t have the jerseys with the logos are the non-competitive novice and pre-novice teams. He explained those teams are sponsored by Tim Hortons and their jerseys had to be ordered earlier this year, before the new logo had been decided. However, they were ordered in the colours of black, red and white, to ensure they sport the official CAMHA colours.

Clarenville players will sport black, red and white jerseys for home games, and white, red and black jerseys for road games.

The new jerseys and the logo were unveiled at a special ceremony at the Eastlink Events Centre on Thursday night, Dec. 28, including a Midget game to showcase the new look.

Thistle said the CAMHA is grateful to the Eastlink Events Centre and staff for helping with this project. He said EEC staff installed the new logo at centre ice over the Christmas holidays to ensure everything was ready for the unveil on Dec. 27.

To celebrate and showcase the new logo the CAMHA has invited minor hockey teams from other locations — Placentia, Bonavista and Gander — to come to Clarenville for three days of fun competition.

Thistle said, “Over the next three days all divisions of CAHMA will have games to showcase and celebrate. Come check out some exciting hockey at the Eastlink Events Centre.”

It’s not a tournament, he added, “Just some fun hockey to showcase our new look.”
