The Miami Dolphins put on an offensive masterclass on Sunday, beating the Denver Broncos 70-20 and scoring the second-most points by a team in a regular season game. NFL History.

The NFL record for points scored in a game was 73, set by the Chicago Bears in the 1940 NFL Championship. Washington’s regular season record was 72 points in 1966.

Late in the fourth quarter, the Dolphins had a chance to tie the Bears’ mark by breaking the NFL regular-season record, but knelt instead of kicking a field goal from the Broncos’ 28-yard line.

“It felt like chasing points, chasing a record, and we didn’t get here. It doesn’t affect the overall finish of the season,” Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said. But the message I thought it was sending didn’t match the way I see it.

Miami’s win marked the fourth time in NFL history that a team scored at least 70 points, including the playoffs. According to ESPN Stats and Information.

Dolphins quarterback Dua Tagovailoa put together a perfect first half, completing 16-of-16 passes for 206 yards with two touchdowns and zero interceptions to lead the team to a 35-13 lead.

Tagovailoa became the first quarterback since 1991 to throw more than 15 passes incomplete.

“It doesn’t compare to anything I’ve ever seen or been a part of,” Tagowailoa said. “It speaks to the resilience of our team. Even though we went into halftime, I’m really proud of the guys and the way they kept playing. Nobody took their foot off the gas, everybody kept playing and that’s the result we got.

Meanwhile, the Dolphins have running backs Raheem Mostert and D’Von Achane Combined for eight total touchdowns Like Miami Broke a franchise scoring record by 15 points.

Achen finished the game with 203 rushing yards on 18 carries, while Mostert totaled 142 yards.

Tagovailoa and most of the team’s stars were ejected from the game early in the fourth quarter. He was 23-of-26 completing the game with four touchdown passes.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton described the game as “awkward” and “tough to watch.”

“Look, it would be one thing to say, ‘Hey, we’re going to go to the next game,’ but we have to watch that tape, so tomorrow will be tough for a lot of players — tough for us, too, as coaches,” Payton added.

Later in the news conference, Payton saw a reporter carrying some statistics of the historic loss as he set his question.

“I know. What questions?” Payton interrupted, “What question? I just finished. Next question.”

In December 1940, the Bears beat Washington 73-0 in the NFL Championship Game. In November 1966, Washington beat the New York Giants 72-41 late in the regular season.

The only team to score 70 points in an NFL game was the Los Angeles Rams in 1950 against the Baltimore Colts.
