Google Unveils Major AI Upgrade for Search in Push Toward Smarter Online Assistance

Gemini-Powered Features Aim to Transform How People Use Google Search

Google has announced one of the most significant updates to its Search platform in more than 25 years, introducing a new suite of artificial intelligence tools designed to make online searches more conversational, personalized and task-oriented.

The changes, unveiled during the company’s annual I/O developer conference on May 19, mark a broader shift toward what Google describes as an “AI-first” search experience. The company says the new features are intended to help users move beyond simple keyword searches and instead interact with Search more naturally, using detailed questions, images, videos and even files.

According to Google, the company’s AI Mode has already surpassed one billion monthly users worldwide, reflecting growing demand for more advanced search capabilities.

Google Introduces a New AI-Powered Search Experience

At the centre of the announcement is the rollout of Gemini 3.5 Flash, Google’s newest AI model, which will now become the default engine powering AI Mode globally.

The updated Search interface includes a redesigned AI-powered Search box that dynamically expands as users type, allowing them to enter more detailed requests. Google says the system is designed to anticipate intent and offer AI-generated suggestions that go beyond traditional autocomplete functions.

Users will also be able to search using multiple formats, including text, images, videos, uploaded files and Chrome browser tabs. The company says this multimodal approach is intended to create a more flexible and intuitive search experience for both desktop and mobile users.

For Canadians increasingly relying on digital tools for work, shopping and daily planning, the update reflects a wider trend toward integrating generative AI into mainstream online services.

Conversational Search Expands Worldwide

Google is also making Search more conversational by allowing users to ask follow-up questions directly within AI-generated summaries.

The company says Search will maintain context between questions, helping users refine topics over longer interactions. As conversations continue, Search results and supporting links are expected to become more tailored and relevant.

This feature is now live globally across mobile and desktop platforms in regions where AI Mode is available.

Search Agents Designed to Monitor Information Automatically

Another major development is the introduction of “Search agents,” AI systems designed to perform ongoing tasks in the background.

Google says these agents can continuously monitor the internet — including news sites, blogs, financial updates and social media platforms — to track changes related to specific user interests.

For example, users searching for rental housing could provide detailed apartment requirements, and the agent would monitor listings and send updates when matching properties become available. Sports fans could also receive alerts when professional athletes announce new product partnerships or merchandise releases.

The company plans to launch these information agents first for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers later this summer.

Booking and Local Services Gain AI Assistance

Google is also expanding AI-driven booking tools within Search.

Users will be able to request highly specific recommendations for restaurants, entertainment venues and local services. Google says Search will combine pricing information, availability and booking links into a single interface.

In select categories such as home repair, beauty appointments and pet care services, users in the United States will also be able to ask Google to contact businesses on their behalf.

While these features are initially launching in the U.S., industry analysts expect similar tools could eventually expand into Canada and other international markets as AI adoption accelerates.

AI Coding Features Bring Interactive Tools Into Search

Google is also integrating agentic coding capabilities into Search through its Antigravity system and Gemini 3.5 Flash model.

The company says Search will be able to generate custom visual interfaces in real time, including graphs, simulations, tables and interactive learning tools tailored to individual questions.

For instance, users exploring scientific topics such as astrophysics or mechanical systems could receive interactive visual explanations directly within Search results.

Google also plans to allow users to create custom dashboards and trackers for ongoing projects. Examples include wedding planning, moving schedules or personal wellness tracking.

In one example shared by the company, users could ask Search to build a personalized fitness tracker that incorporates live weather conditions, maps, reviews and other real-time data.

These custom AI-generated experiences are expected to launch in the coming months for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States.

Expanded Personal Intelligence Features

Google also announced a broader rollout of its “Personal Intelligence” system to nearly 200 countries and territories in 98 languages, without requiring a paid subscription.

The feature allows users to optionally connect services such as Gmail and Google Photos to provide Search with more personal context. Integration with Google Calendar is expected in the future.

Google emphasized that users will retain control over connected apps and personal data, stating that the system was designed with transparency and user choice in mind.

The move comes as technology companies face increasing scrutiny from regulators in Canada, the European Union and elsewhere over data privacy and AI governance.

Google Positions AI as the Future of Search

The latest update signals Google’s ambition to redefine Search as more than a tool for retrieving links. Instead, the company is positioning AI as an active assistant capable of organizing information, completing tasks and generating personalized digital experiences.

As competition intensifies in the AI sector, the changes also highlight how major technology companies are racing to reshape how people interact with the internet.

For users, the shift could fundamentally change the role Search plays in everyday life — from finding information to managing increasingly complex tasks online.
